• Do I have to pay for EWCC services?
No, all services provided by EWCC are free to UM students.
  • Who goes to EWCC?
Any student. Even good writers come to EWCC because they know it’s useful to talk about what they’re writing and get some feedback.
  • When should I go to EWCC?
Come and discuss the paper topic before you start writing. Or, bring your assignment and we can help you brainstorm ideas. You can also come with a draft you’re working on, and we can give you suggestions for improvement.
  • Will the tutors correct the grammar mistakes on my paper?
Not all of them. We can show you how to spot your own mistakes so that you can become a better writer.
  • What happens during a consultation?
You ask some questions and we ask some questions. We may read part of or all of your paper, and you talk about your writing concerns. We give you suggestions from a reader’s point of view. We talk with you about strategies you can use to improve your paper. We offer personal help with planning, revising, and any other aspects of your writing. We don’t write papers for you, but we help you write better ones.
  • What should I bring to a consultation?
Come in with some questions. If possible, bring an outline or a working draft so that we can meet your specific needs.
  • What kinds of questions will the tutor answer?
We can answer questions about a text’s organization, its focus, etc. We can also answer questions about research techniques, citation formats, and mechanics (such as spelling and grammar).
  • What should I do if I have a time conflict with a workshop that I want to attend?
If there’s only one of you, make an appointment with us and let us know that you’d like more information on a particular workshop. We can discuss the workshop content with you individually. If there are more than 6 of you, we can make separate arrangements.
  • How does the Chatroom work?
The Chatroom is a place that gives you a chance to speak English. It’s open six hours a week (please refer to our schedule page). We suggest some discussion topics, or you may bring something interesting that you’d like to share with the group. Look for EWCC flyers that tell you when the Chatroom begins and ends each semester.
  • I have a time conflict with EWCC’s hours. What should I do?
You can call or email us, and we will do our best to make other arrangements to meet with you.
  • Can EWCC help me with my graduate thesis?
We don’t work with a complete graduate-level thesis, but we are more than happy to look at parts of your thesis chapters during your writing process!
  • Can EWCC help me with my CV/résumé?
Yes, in fact, we have a workshop that covers this topic. If you already have a CV/résumé, we can help you improve it. If you don’t have one, we recommend attending our workshop.
